I'm writing to apprise you of a development in my endeavors at the library, where I have made something of a breakthrough in methods of information extraction, if not in information itself. With the help of a colleague, I have successfully broken the protections on a formerly unreadable book, rendering the invisible text within temporarily visible to him so that he was able to transcribe several pages before the effects of the ritual wore off. These pages, written in Fae script, contained only rudimentary information about the topic I had hoped to research (that is, the dangerous megafauna of this realm), yet the ritual's success still serves as proof that these restricted texts can be unveiled with time and effort.
I hope this news encourages and invigorates your own efforts as it has mine. I shall keep you informed of any further developments.
[ He sent her a whole letter, and that amuses her greatly. ]
Hi Daniel,
(You can call me Lois. Can I call you Daniel?)
That’s great news! Any information may be useful information. What did you have to do in order to get it to appear? Bearing in mind that I know virtually nothing about magic.
Is there any way that I can help? Again… no magic to speak of here.
[ The poor man never learned texting etiquette, only letter-writing etiquette, so naturally, he used the latter when sending his first ever private text message. Still, he notes Lois's less formal style and tries to follow suit. ]
(Yes, 'Daniel' is fine.)
The ritual involved the use of a homemade optical device and candle flame. It wasn't anything too burdensome. So far, the difficulty has been in finding exactly what kind of ritual might work for each ensorcelled book. The protections the Fae have placed on these books prevents me from sensing which Principle may subvert them.
That said, if I can narrow down the possibilities through trial and error, the rituals themselves are relatively simple. One does not need any aptitude in "magic" to assist in their enactment. That said, different people may have qualities which predispose them to success in certain kinds of rituals.
Would you like me to contact you if I have need of an assistant for a ritual relevant to your own talents?
[ Daniel doesn't actually need for her to tell him—he had gotten a good sense of her Principles when they met. At the same time, it would probably put Lois more at ease to tell him about herself rather than knowing he can intuit information from simply being in someone's presence. ]
That would be very helpful, if you're willing to share.
[ Shit. People are always the worst at describing their own talents. Why did she offer to do this? ]
I’m a journalist, so I’m a good writer. I like to do research and share that information. Everyone should be informed about issues. I’m not afraid to ask questions.
[ Either left outside the door or handed over in person is a handmade mug. Steve has themed each mug around the person as much as his developing pottery skills have let him. He's made Lois and Clark's mugs a matching set. ]
